Everyone wants fast, stable Wi-Fi, but few realize how much the layout of your home and placement of your router impact performance. If your speed tests are strong near your router but your streaming stutters in the living room, your Wi-Fi network may simply need some tuning.

Start by placing your router in a central, open area, ideally off the floor and away from walls. Avoid positioning it behind TVs or inside cabinets as radio waves don’t travel well through dense materials. Keep it away from microwaves and baby monitors too, which can cause interference.

Next, check the type of network you’re running. Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. The 2.4GHz band covers longer distances and penetrates walls better, but 5GHz delivers higher speeds over shorter ranges. Using both strategically — or deploying a mesh system in larger homes — can dramatically improve reliability.

If you’re still struggling, it may be time for a Wi-Fi site survey. MAETRIX can help identify dead zones, interference sources, and configuration improvements to get every corner of your home connected. After all, high-speed internet is only as strong as the signal that delivers it to your devices.
